Planning your holiday
A handy checklist to help you plan your first family holiday together.
Pre-planning is all about relieving stress, so here’s a handy checklist to help you get organised prior to your departure:
Several months before:
- Apply for your baby’s passport, if you need one – this can take three weeks to process, and you’re best off not booking your travel until you have it in hand.
- Check the facilities at your destination; do they supply a cot, highchair and other equipment?
- Organise travel insurance. If you’re holidaying in Europe, don’t forget to get a European health card (EHIC).
- If you’re flying long haul, you can usually book an air cot for your baby, so be sure to request this when making the booking.
Several weeks before:
- Rather than taking baby milk and baby food through airport security, you may want to pre-order formula and food from a chemist in the airport departure lounge. Check with your specific airport to see if they offer this service; they usually require 10 days’ notice.
- If travelling abroad, it might be worth checking whether the supermarkets stock your brand of nappies - they are notoriously bulky to pack.
- If you’re planning to hire a car whilst away, you may want to call to see if the hire company provides baby car seats; if not, you can take your own car seat and check it in as luggage.
- Taking lots of baby food can be heavy in your hold luggage; however, pouches tend to be a bit lighter. HiPP Organic products are available abroad, but the varieties available may be different to what is available in the UK, so it’s best to take your baby's favourites with you.
